Osprey fledge their young on man-made platforms.  The Chesapeake Bay has the largest breeding population of osprey in the world.  Most platforms last about 10 years and should be inspected and cleaned every few years.

Osprey are fairly large raptors that feed almost exclusively on live fish.  In addition to man-made platforms, they will build their stick nests on channel markers and old duck blinds.

Osprey platforms are installed in February and March. They are mounted on either an existing  piling or on a 21 foot long galvanized pipe.

Without a proper platform, osprey will nest on almost any flat surface - including a dock!
This Canada goose enjoyed the safety of an osprey platform near St. Michaels.
